Things To Do

Fjarland is superbly located with easy access to the glacier and with great hiking possibilities in breathtaking scenery.

Many people come here to enjoy the tranquility and atmosphere of Fjærland, but the place also offers a vast variety of activities. Here you can find The Norwegian Book Town, The Norwegian Glacier Museum and Bøyum bird sanctuary. There are also several marked hiking trails all over the area. Glaciers hikes to Flatbrehytta og Fjærland Kayak & Glacier and the Fjærland culture are further highlights of the activity program.

Arrival Day - 50 meters from the pier and 2.9 km from the bus stop you will find Hotel Mundal in the middle of Fjærland center. Check into the hotel before you get yourself some lunch in Kafe Mikkel where we serve homemade cakes, baguettes, a soup of the day and drinks every day during the season. A walk after lunch can be strolling around in The Norwegian Book Town with its twelve outlets or visit one of the tours described in the hiking booklet that can be obtained at the reception. It is also lovely to paddle kayaks on the fjord.

Option 1 - In Nature - Make yourselves a great packed lunch and do one of the tours described in hiking booklet that can be purchased at the reception. For example, a trip to Flatbrehytta with stunning views over the glacier and the Fjærlandsfjord. Another option is a pre-booked guided tour on the glacier itself or on the fjord. Finish off the day after dinner with a short walk along the seaside until you get to the bird-watching tower at Bøyum.

Option 2 - Nature and landscape without a car - Take the Glacierbus at 09:45 from the dock that takes you to the Norwegian Glacier Museum and then to the two glacier arms; The Supphelleglacier and The Bøyaglacier. Then try the delicious cake at Kafe Mikkel before a short afternoon walk to Heimastølen where you can see well preserved traditional old farm buildings.

Option 3 - Nature and landscape by car - stop by the Norwegian Glacier Museum before continuing north along Rv5. Turn right by the signpost that says Supphellebreen to watch the glacierarm. Return to Rv5 and turn right just before the tunnel to see the Bøyaglacier. Maybe stop by for a cup of coffee and a quick trip to the souvenir shop Brevasshytta before you go back on Rv5 and continue through the tunnel towards Skei. A half an hour towards Jølster is Astruptunet, a museum which is both an insight into daily life in the early 1900s and a monument to the painter Nikolai Astrup's life and work.
